Diego Simeone defends Godin

The Atletico Madrid boss admitted the player was rightly sent off, but also insisted Godin never meant to hurt anyone.

Yesterday Atletico Madrid won 2-1 against Napoli in the Audi Cup in Munich. Los Colchoneros will be playing Liverpool at 20:30 today in the final of the pre-season tournament.

During their game against Napoli, the club from Madrid saw their skipper leave the pitch after being given a red card by the referee. Diego Godin came with a late tackle in the final minutes of the match and was ‘rightly’ sent off. Napoli’s Ounas, who was on the receiving end of the lunge, left the pitch in tears, leaving fans in fear that he may be out for an extended period.

“These things happen. The referee rightly sent off Godin,” said Simeone after the game, according to Football Italia.

“The tackle was late, he didn’t want to hurt Ounas. We played our game and we know he didn’t want to hurt [Ounas].

“Reactions from the bench? The important thing is that [Ounas] is fine. The referee rightly sent him off, that’s it.”
