Real Madrid are the UEFA Super Cup winners

Los Blancos outclassed the Red Devils in Skopje, Macedonia in the UEFA Super Cup Final.

Manchester United started the game off strong as they appeared to be the more active side on the pitch. However, as the game proceeded Real Madrid slowly took over and they gained possession of the ball while dictating the tempo of the game.

The first great opportunity was for Zidane’s men, following a corner kick. Casemiro headed the ball towards the goal as he beat David de Gea, but the crossbar came to United’s help and denied the midfielder the opening goal.

The player that was easily noticeable on the field was Isco as he did not stop causing trouble for United’s defense. A few minutes after Real’s corner opportunity, it was again Casemiro who was under the spotlight. However, this time he managed to put the ball into the back of the net and give Real Madrid the lead. Los Blancos’ No.14 got a great pass from Carvajal behind United’s back four and finished beautifully for his team. There were offside claims, and later on when seen on replays, Casemiro was indeed offside. However, the offside was barely visible, meaning it was nearly impossible for the linesman to spot it.

In the 34th minute Kroos could have been in big trouble as his pass got crossed by Herrera, which saw Lukaku in a great one versus one position against Navas. Fortunately for Real, he was offside and Untied got nothing out of the situation. Mourinho’s men shook off the bad start and slowly got back into the game.

The second half started great for Real Madrid. Los Blancos were sharp and looking for a goal from the very start. Usual suspect, Isco, combined with Bale and got himself into a great position against de Gea. Real’s No. 22 made no mistake as he increased the lead for his team, 2-0.

United’s response was immediate. Herrera passed to Pogba, who sent the ball towards the goal with a powerful header. Navas made a great save, but the ball went straight to Lukaku who should have comfortably made it 2-1, but he smashed the ball with power over the crossbar.

In the 60th minute Real Madrid had another great chance, this time through Gareth Bale. The Welshman was in great position to simply end the game for Manchester United, but he relied on power rather than accuracy as he fired the ball into the crossbar.

Shortly after, it was United’s moment. Matic with a powerful shot from distance tested Navas’ reflexes, who made a great save, but could not catch the ball. Lukaku was the quickest one to react on the follow-up, and this time he made no mistake, scoring one back for his team.

At the end of the game Marcus Rashford had a brilliant opportunity to put things to level, but his shot was easily saved by Real’s goalkeeper and that wrapped up the final 2-1.
