Nightmare for Chelsea

The Premier League champions lost 2-3 against Burnley as two players in blue shirts saw the red card. (Extended Highlights)

Antonio Conte’s team suffered a horrible defeat on the opening day of their 2017-18 campaign.

Gary Cahill was sent off with a direct red card just 13 minutes into the game after a dangerous tackle. The other player in Blue who was also shown a red card was Cesc Fàbregas. The Spaniard was first shown a yellow card in the 16th minute as he ironically applauded the referee’s decision, and then in the 81st minute he was given a second yellow for a reckless tackle.

The Blues from London seemed shocked by having their captain sent off so early as they looked completely clueless in the first half of the game. Burnley took complete advantage of the situation and managed to score three goals by the 43 minute mark. Sam Vokes and Stephen Ward scored for the away team as Vokes netted twice and Ward once.

Chelsea tried to get back into the game in the second half, with Morata playing a key part in Chelsea’s attempt to put things back to level. Morata scored in the 69th minute and assisted for Luiz’s goal in the 88th minute. However, the Blues from London took too long to shake off the shock from the first half, which saw the game end 2-3 in favor of Burnley.
