The Spurs kicked off their campaign with three points against newcomers New Castle.
The game started off well for Benitez’s men, who were the more active side on the pitch and looked for a goal more often. They had a number of chances, but did not really materialize on any of them. In the 16th minute the crowd wanted a penalty for the home team as Gayle was taken down, but there was an offside signaled right before the situation.
In the second half things changed. The Spurs slowly took over the game and started looking towards the goal more and more. Jonjo Shelvey made things worse for his team after a ridiculous red card. The England midfielder intentionally stepped on Dele Alli, who was lying on the ground, right in front of the referee. The official had no hesitation about his decision as he showed Shelvey the red card straight away.
In the 61st minute Tottenham opened the score through Alli following a beautiful run from Eriksen. Just nine minutes after, Davies was the one to finish a well-organized attacked by Pochettino’s men and wrapped up the final 0-2 for the club from North London.
