Start of the Bundesliga season

Champions Bayern Munich received the visit of Bayer Leverkusen on Allianz Arena, in the opening match of the 2017/2018 Bundesliga season.

Line-ups:

Bayern Munich: Ulreich – Kimmich, Sule, Hummels, Alaba – Tolisso, Rudy – Muller, Vidal, Ribery – Lewandowski;

Bayer Leverkusen: Leno – Henrichs, Tah, Bender, Wendell – Kohr, Aranguiz – Bellarabi, Mehmedi, Bailey – Volland.

The match was the first one in the history of Bundesliga to benefit of the assistance of VAR technology.

1-0: A free-kick from the left wing was taken by Sebastian Rudy in the 9th minute. The ball was sent perfectly for Niklas Sule at the far post, who cooly headed it inside the left post. The two former Hoffenheim players combined for Bayern’s first goal in the new season.

2-0: In the 18th minute, a corner from the right side was poorly dealt with by Leno and the ball found its way to Arturo Vidal who sent it towards the far post, from where Corentin Tolisso headed it home. Another debut goal.

In the 22nd minute, Kevin Volland received a ball in the box, turned towards the goal and took a low shot, but Ulreich was able to parry it away.

Big chance for Tolisso in the 24th minute. He received a ball in the box and took a quick shot that was deflected by Leno and then hit the left post.

Half-time: Referee signalled the end of a first half that finished under heavy rain. Bayern Munich dominated the game, but Leverkusen had their fair number of chances as well.

The start of the second half has been delayed by 15 minutes, due to weather conditions.

Leverkusen made two substitutions at the break, in a bid to turn the match into their favour. Julian Brandt replaced Leon Bailey, while Aleksandar Dragovic came in for Sven Bender.

In the 51st minute, Bayern Munich appealed for a penalty. The referee allowed game to play on, but asked for the assistance of VR when the ball went out. The VAR system informed the referee about a foul in the box over Robert Lewandowski and the referee indicated a penalty for the champions.

3-0: Robert Lewandowski calmly took the penalty into the right side of the goal and made it 3-0 for Bayern.

In the 57th minute, Julian Brandt got on the end of a pass inside the box and directed a low shot towards the middle of the goal, but Ulreich made a great reaction save. The ball found its way to Kohr from the rebound, but his shot was blocked again on the goal line.

In the 61st minute, Thomas Muller was replaced by Arjen Robben.

3-1: Leverkusen managed to reduce the difference in the 65th minute. Admir Mehmedi received a ball inside the box on the right side and unleashed a powerful shot, no chance for Ulreich. What a strike!

In the 77th minute, Franck Ribery was also substituted. Kingsley Coman came on.

Robert Lewandowski missed a great opportunity in the 85th minute, when he went one on one against Leno. The Polish striker  tried an effort from the edge of the box, but his shot went wide of the left post.

In the first minute of added time, Robben had the chance to increase the difference. The Dutchman received a ball in the box and took a quick shot, but his effort was denied by Leno.

Full time: Bayern Munich won their opening game of the 2017/2018 Bundesliga season, 3-1 against Leverkusen, in a match that they dominated.
