Zlatan Ibrahimovic is set to sign a new deal with Manchester United, as early as this week.
According to ESPN, the Swedish striker will return to Old Trafford as a player and continue his career with Manchester United. The 35-year-old suffered a knee ligament injury earlier in April, that was supposed to keep him out until 2018. With his contract running out this summer, United decided against extending his deal.
But Ibrahimovic’s recovery went better than expected and the Red Devils are now ready to offer him a new deal. The Swedish striker was allowed to use Manchester United facilities throughout his entire rehabilitation process.
Jose Mourinho is a big fan of Ibrahimovic and has constantly informed the player about his desire to continue at Manchester United. In his first season at Old Trafford, Ibrahimovic scored 28 goals. But it’s his influence in the dressing room that made Mourinho offer him a new deal with the club.
Ibrahimovic had the chance to sign for LA Galaxy back in July, the US team being very keen on his services. But it appears that Ibrahimovic is confident that he can still play at the highest level, and will take lower wages for the chance to play in one of the biggest leagues.
With the new contract, Manchester United are also set to receive a boost in their commercial department, as shirts with Ibrahimovic’s name on the back sold better than any other player last season.
