Ronaldo, Messi and Neymar nominated for Best Player award

FIFA have announced the finalists for the 2017 Best Men’s Player award.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr. will fight for the title of best male player in football. Last month, a list of 24 players was presented with names of the best players in the world. That list has now been narrowed to only three names and the winner of the award will be announced on October 23rd, in London, at the Best FIFA Football Awards ceremony.

The winner of the award will be selected based on the votes of national team coaches, captains, selected media and fans. The period taken into consideration for evaluating players’ performances is November 20th, 2016 to July 2nd, 2017.

The award is a new recognition in football world, having only been introduced last year. Cristiano Ronaldo won the first trophy and, according to ESPN, the Portuguese star is now a favourite to win it again, after having helped his team to defend their Champions League trophy and win the La Liga title and FIFA Club World Cup.

Ronaldo scored a brace in the 2017 Champions League final won by Real Madrid, 4-1 against Juventus. He finished the competition as the top goalscorer, with 12 goals.

Lionel Messi has been nominated for his performances with Barcelona in a rather disappointing season for the club. Messi finished the La Liga season as top goalscorer, with 37 goals, 12 ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Argentinian also helped his team win the Copa del Rey.

Neymar became the most expensive player in football history, after PSG paid his €222m release clause with Barcelona.
