Karl-Heinz Riedle says Ousmane Dembele should be banned for the behaviour displayed to force a move away from Dortmund.
The former striker of Borussia slammed the young French player for pressuring his club to sell him to Barcelona. Dembele eventually got the move that he wanted, transferring to the Catalan giants for an initial fee of €105m.
Dortmund were reluctant to let Dembele leave Signal Iduna Park and have initially refused any negotiations with Barcelona. However, the 20-year-old made it clear that he wants to move and went on a strike, refusing to show up to training sessions, in a bid to force Borussia to let him go. The French winger eventually earned his move to Spain and has stated multiple times that he does not regret his actions.
However, speaking to Ominsport, Riedle is amazed by the player’s actions and said that Dembele should be punished for his behaviour: “[He made a] massive impact, we knew it was difficult to keep him, [but] he wanted to play for Barcelona.
I didn’t like how it went, how he pressured [Dortmund], it’s a joke. You should be banned for doing things like this.”
Karl-Heinz Riedle scored two goals in the Champions League final won by Borussia Dortmund against Juventus in 1997. During his four seasons with Borussia, between 1993 and 1997, Riedle scored 24 goals in 87 matches.
