Netherlands have missed World Cup presence and Arjen Robben announced that he will retire from the national team.
Bayern Munich’s winger scored the goals of the 2-0 victory of Netherlands over Sweden on Tuesday evening. But the win was not enough and now the Netherlands will have to watch the World Cup from TV.
With last night’s victory, Netherlands equalled the number of points that Sweden had, but the Scandinavian’s superior goal difference allowed them to qualify for the playoffs. Netherlands needed to win at a difference of seven goals to take Sweden’s place.
Arjen Robben made his debut for the national team in 2003 and played a key role in the Netherlands’ performances on the international stage in the last 10 years. The Dutch even came close to winning the World Cup in 2010, when they lost the final to Spain in extra-time. In 2014, Robben scored three goals to help his team reach the semi-finals of the World Cup in Brazil.
Arjen Robben played 96 matches for his national team, scoring 37 goals and providing 29 assists in the process.
