Former Bavarians’ defender and assistant manager is positive about the newly-appointed manager.
Retired Bayern Munich full-back Klaus Augenthaler believes that bringing Jupp Heynckes back as a head coach of the Bavarians was the right decision to make. The Bundesliga champions had a slow start of the season as the patience of the German giants’ leadership ran out, which led to the sacking of Carlo Ancelotti.
The 72-year-old Heynckes has been out of the business for four years since retiring in 2013 and leaving the hot seat at the Allianz Arena for Pep Guardiola. Despite the long break from football though, Augenthaler is positive that Jupp is the right man for the job.
“I think it was the right decision [to sign Heynckes],” Augenthaler told Goal .
“I’m sure Bayern did not only say, ‘Now we sign Jupp and things will become great again.’ Probably they talked as well with other candidates.
“There have been two coaches with a running contract: (Liverpool manager) Jurgen Klopp and (Hoffenheim manager) Julian Nagelsmann. I think, Bayern spoke to them.
“The only coach, which would have been free, was (former Dortmund manager) Thomas Tuchel. The Bayern bosses thought about that as well, but probably it didn’t fit. But that’s just an assumption.”
