Chelsea icon Didier Drogba revealed he will retire at the end of the season
The legendary striker of the Blues, Didier Drogba has announced he will retire after the season is over.
The 39-year-old who is currently playing for USL side Phoenix Rising in the United States, is to devote his time to other projects, Sky Sports understands.
The former Ivory Coast international has signed for the American club in April and has managed to score 10 goals in only 14 games, modifying his career total to 296 goals in 677 matches.
The striker revealed he needs time for other projects in his life, and football is starting to hold him back now.
“Ah, do you want a scoop? I think next year will be my last season,” Drogba told RMC Sport.
“At some point you have to stop. I need to have time for my other projects. It’s good to play, but at 39, it holds me back a bit,” he added.
The 39-year-old icon holds the record for goals scored for Ivory Coast. He joined Chelsea twice in his career, first for 8 very successful seasons, with a Champions League trophy in 2012.
The Blues defeated Bayern Munich at Allianz Arena in penalties, as the game finished 1-1 after extra time. Drogba scored the winning penalty against the Germans, setting the final result 4-3.
The eight seasons he has spent with Chelsea were stunning for the Blues. It was in fact, one of the most successful periods in Chelsea’s history, as the club went on to win 4 Premier League titles, 3 League Cups and 4 FA Cups in those 8 years.
Drogba’s second spell with the club only lasted for a year, as the striker returned to London in 2014. The African superstar concluded his Chelsea career with a total of 164 goals scored in 381 matches. Furthermore, fans voted for him as the club’s best player ever five years ago.
