Ousmane Dembele will return to the pitch but not as Barcelona have imagined it, as the Frenchman will play for his former club Rennes
The France international is still working his way back from a hamstring injury but is to return to the field as a special guest of former club Rennes, GOAL understands.
Despite Barcelona paying an enormous amount of €105 million for the France international, the 20-year-old prospect has only had three appearances for the Blaugrana.
The talented attacker picked up a hamstring injury during Barca’s La Liga clash against Getafe on September 16, and hasn’t been able to return yet.
However, Ernesto Valverde can be happy with his forward’s recovery process, as Dembele was expected to return after four months, but it has been reported that the 20-year-old can return against Real Madrid on December 23.
Whether or not the Frenchman will be in form for El Clasico, we’ll see, however it’s a good sign that Barca’s manager can count on him.
An interesting thing is, Dembele will make his return to the pitch earlier than the clash between Valverde’s and Zidane’s men.
His former club, Rennes have announced that Dembele will return as a special guest of the club for their game against Nantes on Saturday. The 20-year-old will take a ceremonial kick-off as a sign of respect from his former side.
The Frenchman started his career at Rennes, as he emerged from their youth academy system.
Dembele made a huge impact in only 29 games in his first senior season with Rennes in 2015-2016. He managed to score 12 goals across all competitions and earned the interest of bigger European clubs.
He then moved to Germany, as Borussia Dortmund signed the striker, but the 20-year-old had only spent one season there as Barcelona splashed the cash for him as a replacement for Neymar.
