Tottenham Hotspur made an offer for the 23-year-old Real Madrid star Mateo Kovacic, but Los Blancos rejected their offer saying the midfielder “is not for sale”
Mateo Kovacic has only appeared in two La Liga games for Zinedine Zidane this season, but the club will not let him go in the winter transfer window, according to general director Jose Angel Sanchez.
The 23-year-old midfielder joined Los Blancos in 2015, when he made his move from Inter but has not been able to become a solid starter for the Spanish giants, having only started in 27 of his 54 games in La Liga.
According to GOAL, Kovacic is contracted to the Spanish capital club until 2021, but his lack of playing time has seen him linked to several clubs. He has just played 30 minutes in the Spanish top-league this season, and further interest from other clubs is expected in January.
The general director claimed Madrid received several offers for the Croatia international last summer, including interest from Tottenham, but Los Blancos still see Kovacic as a key player in their future and want the youngster to wait patiently.
“Kovacic is not for sale, we will never sell him! If there are any offers for him in January, we will reject them. Last summer there were a lot of offers and questions about him,” Sanchez told Sportske Novosti.
“Juventus and AC Milan didn’t send offers, but Inter must have sent one. There was one from England, it was Tottenham.”
Sanchez also said that even though Kovacic doesn’t get to play too often, the Croatian wants to stay at the Bernabeu.
“Mateo is a smart guy, he knows he would have played in the starting XI in each of those teams that want him, but he is aware we count on him too. He is one of the players the club’s future relies on,” he said.
