Son Heung-Min is the Asian international player of the year

Tottenham Hotspur attacker Son Heung-Min received the award for being the best Asian International Player of the Year, after a terrific season last year

According to GOAL, Son beat away challenges from Huddersfield’s Aaron Mooy and Borussia Dortmund’s Shinji Kagawa to win the award for the second time in his career. Last year, Son lost to Shinij Okazaki, but now it seems as the Tottenham forward was the best overseas Asian player of last season.

Okazaki’s past performances for Leicester City are described by many as heroic and unbelievable, and even Son was unable to top that, as it turned out during the 2016 AFC Annual Awards. However, 2017 is a different year, Son has proven that.

Mauricio Pochettino’s Tottenham Hotspur had another Premier League campaign season as they have finished second in the English top-flight behind champions, Chelsea in the 2016-17 season.

In an impressive and effective season in 2016-2017, the South Korea international appeared in more than 40 games for his club, scoring 21 goals for Pochettino’s side, which was a superb return from the former Bayer Leverkusen attacker.

Their success last season made sure of another Champions League appearance for Son and his club in the 2017-18 season, GOAL continues. However, this year the north-London team seem to have been struggling, as Pochettino’s men have suffered their fourth defeat in the Premier League on Tuesday, as they lost 1-2 to Leicester City.

But one should look on what such an impressive player has achieved on a national level as well. Son was also a crucial player in helping South Korea to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, as they earned a direct qualification after an astonishing group stage finish in second spot in the third round of the Asian area, behind fellow qualifiers, Iran.

Right now, however, it’s Mauricio Pochettino who needs the striker’s amazing ability to turn around things in London.
