At the end of the day, Atletico didn’t manage to make a miracle happen and they are out of the Champions League – meanwhile, Bayern Munich get their revenge on PSG and Juventus secured their spot by beating Olympiacos away from home.
Manchester United secured the top spot in their group but it wasn’t as easy as everyone thought – they had to come from behind against CSKA Moscow at Old Trafford. Alan Dzagoev scored a lucky goal to give the guests a surprising lead but Romelu Lukaku equalised after the break with a superb finish and Marcus Rashford scored the winner just minutes after. A bit surprisingly, Basel managed to beat Benfica 2-0 away from home as Elyounoussi and Oberlin scored the only goals of the game.
In a different group, Chelsea failed to grab the top spot as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Atletico at Stamford Bridge. The Spanish side needed a win desperately to keep their chances alive and they scored the opener thanks to Saul’s cool finish but the home side levelled after Hazard’s ball was deflected behind Oblak by Stefan Savic. Meanwhile, AS Roma won their match against Qarabaq 1-0 at home as Perotti scored the second-half winner and the Italian side have reached the top spot.
Juventus are also through as they beat Olympiacos 2-0 in Greece thanks to Cuadrado and Bernandeschi both being on the scoresheet. Barcelona extended their home winning streak as Sporting’s Jeremy Mathieu scored an own goal which secured the three points for the home side.
Probably the most watched match was played in Munich as Bayern tried to get the revenge on PSG for their latest 3-0 defeat. The German giant were 2-0 up during the halftime as Robert Lewandowski and Corentin Tolisso scored goals – Mbappe get his side back into the game but the Frenchman, Tolisso, scored his second to secure his side’s valuable win. In the second match of this group, Celtic were beaten 1-0 at home by Anderlecht but it just wasn’t enough for the Belgian side and the Scottish champion finished third in the group.
