Merten urges Napoli to make a quick recovery following Champions League failure

The Italian outfit did not go through their best week, getting knocked out of Europe’s elite as well as losing their first place in Serie A to Inter.

SSC Napoli forward Dries Mertens admitted his team is going through a bad phase after they got knocked out of the Champions League following a rather surprising 2-1 loss to Feyenoord on Wednesday.

The defeat meant that Sarri’s men would take the third place in Group F, behind group-winners Manchester City and runners-up Shakhtar Donetsk. However, the Partenopei will take part in the Europa League and Mertens insists that they need to improve as soon as possible and go back to winning.

“We are in a difficult period and we didn’t manage to play our usual football,” Mertens told UEFA’s official website.

“During every season you have to face a spell like this, but we want to return to our usual standard as quickly as possible.

“It was not easy tonight after hearing the score from the other game, but we have to look at ourselves in the mirror and try to understand how to start playing our best football again.

“We are a solid group and I’m sure we will do it.”
