Nacho: Ronaldo’s win would help Real

Real Madrid defender Nacho Fernandez is hoping that his team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo will win his fifth Ballon d’Or award on Thursday

Nacho is rooting for his colleague to be named the best player on the planet again, claiming the impact of the Portuguese winning would be positive for everyone in the Spanish capital. The Real defender also praised Ronaldo for his achievement during Wednesday’s Champions League game against Borussia Dortmund.

Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo is the favourite of Thursday’s ceremony, when France Football will announce the winner of the 2017 Ballon d’Or award. The Portuguese striker was named the Best FIFA Men’s Player back in October, and he is looking to collect another individual prize this year.

The 32-year-old superstar led Real Madrid to La Liga championship once again, and to the successful defense of their Champions League crown in 2016-17. However, the Real striker has struggled to find his goal-scoring boots this season, as he has only found the back of the net twice in the domestic competition so far.

But even when he struggles in the Spanish top-flight, Ronaldo continues to excel in the Champions League. The striker’s goal in Madrid’s 3-2 win over Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday made him the first player to score in all six matches of a Champions League group stage, GOAL reports.

As crucial games against Barcelona and Sevilla are coming for the Spanish giants, Nacho is hoping Ronaldo’s achievement will lift the spirits of everyone in the Spanish capital.

“He became the first player to score in every group game, so we are happy for him,” the defender said.

“Hopefully he’ll get another Ballon d’Or so let’s hope he wins it. Everything related to Cristiano winning Ballons d’Or mean the team is doing very well. Let’s hope he gets more of them and that’s positive for everyone.”
