Former Gunner believes he should have left sooner

Coquelin recently left the Emirates to join La Liga, but concedes that it might have been the wrong decision to stay and fight for his spot at Arsenal.

Francis Coquelin admits he partially regrets not leaving the Gunners sooner as he completed a move to Valencia on Thursday. The Frenchman used to get a decent amount of playing time in Wenger’s squad and his performances during the 2016/17 campaign sparkled interest in a lot of European clubs, but he decided to stay put and fight for a spot in the starting XI of Arsenal.

However, his decision might have been wrong as the midfielder made only one start for the Gunners since the start of the season and his departure seemed like the most reasonable thing to do.

“It’s true that there was interest in the summer but in my head I wanted to continue at Arsenal and do well there,” Coquelin said as quoted by Daily Mail. “It wasn’t to be and now this opportunity has come up.

“I almost regret not having come before. I think it’s an excellent opportunity for me and I’m very grateful. It’s a big challenge, and a new start in my life for me, which I’m very excited about.”

The 26-year-old will be part of Valencia until 2022 when his agreement with the Spaniards comes to an end.
