Pep Guardiola, the Manchester City head coach, believes that Sergio Agüero will be the one who can help his team to break the misery at Anfield as the Citizens have been struggling to win there in the past years.
The Spaniard knows about this problem and Manchester City managed to win at Anfield for the last time back in 2003 – since then, they have grabbed four draws and 10 defeats which is not good at all. However, Pep Guardiola’s side are now at the top of the table, 15 points ahead of second-placed Manchester United and they seem to be unbeatable at the moment…
The former Bayern Munich or Barcelona coach spoke about this upcoming match as he said, according to Goal: “I don’t believe in these kinds of things but in 45 years Manchester City won twice there. Last time was 15 years ago. It means a lot in terms of how complicated it is to play there. The records are there to be broken and maybe, on Sunday, Sergio will break that record.”
He continued by adding that it will be another difficult test for his team: “If you want to achieve something that is good and win titles you have to win in these kinds of stages. This season at Stamford Bridge we were able to do that, but we still have to go to Anfield and [play away] against Arsenal and Tottenham. We still have a lot of things to do but tomorrow is such an important game to see again if we are able to do big things in this season – in the big stages of the Champions League.”
In the end, Pep Guardiola insisted that they have managed to achieve wins like that before: “It is a good test for us. When we arrive at the knockout stages in the big competitions, how is our behaviour? We did it at Stamford Bridge, we did it at Old Trafford and [at Anfield] we have to do that.”
