Russia managed to beat Saudi Arabia 5-0 in the opening game of the World Cup but one of the most experienced players in the squad, Yuri Zhirkov, claimed that it was a hard-fought win.
The former Chelsea full-back insisted that the opponent played well too despite the final result and the home team had to fight hard to win this crucial opening match – but they did great and achieved their first goal.
Zhirkov spoke about this game as he said that Saudi Arabia also had a couple of dangerous opportunities and this game wasn’t easy at all, according to fourfourtwo.com:
“We played a good game. At the same time I cannot say that it was an easy win, our opponents also played well, and they created dangerous chances.”
“[Head coach] Cherchesov said after the game that we did well. After all [this was] the first World Cup game, we should move forward in the same way,”
