Despite the win, Arsenal fans seemed frustrated with Wenger’s contract extension.
The Gunners took the win home after scoring five against Benfica in a game that was part of the Emirates Cup. Wenger’s team made a strong showing at the second half as they scored three goals in the last 45 minutes of the game.
The first half ended with a result of 2-2. Franco Cervi opened the score, but Arsenal got back in the game as Theo Walcott scored twice to make it 2-1. Shortly after Arsenal’s second goal, Benfica’s Salvio was the one to put things back to level.
During the second half an own goal by Lopez put the Gunners back in the lead. Giroud and Iwobi also put their names on the scoresheet and wrapped up the final 5-2 for the Gunners.
According to the rules of the tournament, Arsenal will most likely end up as winners since teams get points for scoring goals in the Emirates Cup, and today’s result will be hard to top off by other teams. Despite the attractive football Arsenal played in attack, they still seem to struggle when it comes to defense. Arsenal’s back four made a huge number of unforced mistakes throughout the game. Some of these mistakes were punished by the opponent as both Benfica goals came after sloppy defending from Per Mertesacker.
A moment to remember came after an Arsenal fan invaded the pitch during the first half. The invader was heading towards Arsène Wenger and seemed quite upset with the French manager. Following the situation, lots of Arsenal fans at the stadium also seemed rather unhappy with the club’s decision to extend Wenger’s contract.
