The two Premier League star wingers have to battle for a role in Brazil’s squad

Chelsea midfielder Willian had been a solid starter for Brazil, as the winger played a key role in his country’s rebirth. Willian has played more games for Brazil than anyone else since World Cup 2014.

The 29-year-old did all this while having three different coaches, disappointing Copa America performances and shameful defeats. Yet, Willian has to fight for his place on the right wing as Philippe Coutinho has shown constant great performances.

Despite all the trouble he went through with Brazil, none of those come close to the tragedy in his personal life. Willian had to overcome losing his mother last season.

Even though the Brazilian went through more than enough drama in his life, he now has to fight for a spot in his country’s starting XI. He is the only player who has lost his starting role since Tite took over as head coach.

Willian was one of the few players who had shown good performances under coach Dunga, when Brazil struggled in their World Cup qualifiers earlier. The winger became a leader on the pitch, and helped his country through tough times.

When asked about his relationship with Tite, Chelsea’s player praised the job the Brazil head coach is doing.

“I’m happy with the confidence that Tite has shown me. He and his coaching staff have been doing a great job. My relationship with him is the best I can hope for and I always say that he cares about all the players equally, giving the same level of attention to first-team players and reserves.”

Willian said he’s clear about Tite’s decisions on who to play.

“Throughout my competition for a place with Coutinho, he was always very honest, insisting that we are two great players and he will play whoever is in the best form,” he said about the competition between him and Philippe Coutinho.
