Two of Liverpool’s players are in the top 3 contenders of the African Player of the Year award, with both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane excelling in their clubs

As GOAL reports, the African Footballer of the Year award shortlist has been released, with Aubameyang, Salah and Mane in the running. It was the Confederation of African Football which has announced the top contenders in every category for the 2017 awards, and it seems like Chelsea player Victor Moses couldn’t make it to the top 3.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane made the cut decided by votes from the members of the Caf Media Committee, Caf Technical & Development Committee and half of the 20-member panel of experts, GOAL continues.

It comes as no surprise though, as the Reds have been impressive this season, mainly thanks to their attacking-minded players, including Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane. Jurgen Klopp’s men are currently fourth placed in the Premier League table, keeping their hopes alive for a Champions League spot next year.

In fact, they have managed to advance from the group stages of the most prestigious European club competition this term. After such performances, both Salah and Mane became fan favourites, along with Philippe Coutinho, and Roberto Firmino.

Last year, it was Leicester City star Riyad Mahrez, who won the accolade for the best player, after an impressive season for the English Premier League side. Now though, Mahrez didn’t even make the top 3 shortlist, despite many of the fans expecting him as a top contender early in the season.

Just to give you a little more information on how and when this award ceremony is going to happen, you should know that the winners will be decided by votes from the head coaches and Technical Directors of the National Associations. Furthermore, the Awards Gala will take place on Thursday, 4 January 2018 in Accra, Ghana.
