Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has heaped praise on his side following their 4-0 victory at FC Basel in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday

It was a remarkable first-half for City, who raced into a three goal lead in the first 24 minutes of the game with goals from İlkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Sergio Aguero.

Another goal from Gundogan, in the second-half, secured a very strong advantage for City in their tie against Basel.

“The Champions League is 180 minutes, but we are almost there,” said City boss Guardiola, according to Sky Sports.

“I’m not saying it’s done, because in football anything can happen, but it’s an amazing result.

“We could have been 2-0 down but then we were 0-2 up. We were clinical and I am delighted with the performance.

“We kept our level, we fought hard and created chances to score. They were four amazing goals. Overall I’m delighted.”

Gundogan, who at one point may have even have scored a hat-trick on the night, received praise from his manager after his strong performance.

“He’s a guy with special qualities,” said Guardiola. “He’s amazing with a good sense of the goal.

“When I see him play I realise how we missed him last season. He is a special player with a lot of personality. He doesn’t feel pressure, he’s a top player.”

The return leg will be played at City’s home ground, The Eithad Stadium, on the 7th of March.
