Jorginho’s shock move to Chelsea instead of Manchester City appears set to happen with Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis confirming the news
The Italy international had been expected to join Pep Guardiola’s this summer after the Catalan had made Jorginho his top transfer target.
But, while Jorginho and his agent were keen on the move, City were unable to agree on a suitable transfer fee with Napoli and Chelsea are understood to have now made a move of their own for the 26-year-old.
The rumours began this week in a double scoop that will see both Jorginho and his former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer.
During Carlo Ancelotti’s official presentation as the new Napoli manager, De Laurentiis confirmed that Jorginho’s move to Chelsea is set to go ahead – although he was not quite as certain when it came to Sarri.
“We said to ourselves if Jorginho has any requests, we’ll take them into account,” said De Laurentiis, according to SportsKeeda.
“I accepted Manchester City’s offer 15 days ago but I have to apologise to them.
“I can understand if the player prefers to live in London than in Manchester, and if Chelsea pay him more I can understand that too.
“Jorginho to Chelsea is not tied to Sarri.”
Sarri is no longer the Napoli manager, but is still tied to the club with his contract.
With Chelsea reluctant to pay for his release clause, on top of paying current head coach Antonio Conte a big severance package for releasing him, Sarri’s prospects do not look to good right now.
But De Laurentiis did have some positive news on the matter: “His case is at the finish line, it depends on him. We’ll see what happens in the next hours.
“My lawyers have submitted the text to his lawyers.”
