Leonardo Bonucci has reportedly handed in a written transfer request at AC Milan, amid reports of interest from Manchester United

The 31-year-old had only joined the Rossoneri last summer following a seven-year spell at Juventus.

But due to the club’s growing financial difficulties and their ban from European competition next season by the UEFA, Bonucci has begun to reconsider his future with the Daily Express now reporting that he has formally asked the Milan board to allow him to leave the San Siro in the current transfer window.

The Premier League is his preferred destination and a move to United now seems likely with head coach Jose Mourinho on the lookout for a new centre-back.

Allegri: Juve must learn how to kill off games

While the Red Devils had been linked with a move for Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld, a lack of progress in the negotiations appear to have lessened their interest and has made them reconsider their options.

Mourinho is a known long-term admirer of Bonucci, but it appears that United won’t all their own way for the Italy international with local rivals Manchester City and Chelsea also believed to be interested.

New Chelsea boss Maurizio Sarr is hoping that he can sway his compatriot into going to Stamford Bridge instead, although the lack of Champions League football for next season could prove to be a disadvantage for them.

Bonucci made a total of 51 appearances for Milan in all competitions last season.
