The German midfielder is happy about his team’s conquest of the FA Community Shield and believes the match against Chelsea was a great test

Defending a title in the English Premier League is not an easy feat, and German midfielder Ilkay Gundogan knows this.

After the 2-0 Citizens victory over Chelsea at Wembley, the footballer believes beating The Blues prepares his team for the upcoming season.

“It was not easy for us, but most importantly we tried to do our job, to do what the manager expects,” Gundogan told City’s website.

“The goals were well built up – the way we played was excellent. Overall it was a great performance and a well-deserved win”, he added.

Last season, Manchester City won the Premier League with a 19-point margin advantage over Manchester United, amassing 100 points to become champions.

“I wouldn’t say that it was necessary to give us confidence, but the first weeks when the season starts, the important games start, you never really know what to expect. You don’t really know 100 percent on which level you are”, he said.
