Atletico Madrid boss Diego Simeone feels that they are now the equals of city rivals Real Madrid following Cristiano Ronaldo’s departure this summer

The Portuguese superstar inspired Los Blancos to three successive Champions League titles with Ronaldo bagging 15 goals in last season’s European campaign.

Now that the 33-year-old has left the Spanish capital in a stunning €112m move to Italian champions Juventus, Real must find a way to continue their success without Ronaldo leading the charge.

On the other hand though, Simeone feels that Ronaldo’s exit will finally put Atletico back on level pecking with Real in La Liga.

“From the results, we aren’t worse than Madrid or Barca, from the individual characteristics of our players, yes,” he said in an interview with El Partidazo de COPE.

“Without Cristiano, we have approached Real Madrid’s level, for sure.”

Atletico defeated Real last month 4-2 in the UEFA Supercup in Tallinn, Estonia.

Simeone’s side are currently 10th in La Liga with one win after three games and will next host Eibar for their next game.
