European Clubs Association executive Andrea Agnelli has confirmed that a third continental club competition will begin in the 2020/21 season, pending final approval from UEFA

Agnelli made the announcement earlier today which see competing clubs on the European stage increase from 80 to 96.

While ECA awaits approval from the UEFA, no further details were provided.

But it’s likely that this new competition will run alongside the Champions League and the Europa League.

Rumours are also circulating that the Europa League could be restructured.

“Pending approval of the UEFA Executive Committee, the ‘green light’ has been given to introduce a third competition, bringing the overall number of clubs to 96, as of the 2021-22 season,” Agnelli said on SportsMax.

The current Juventus president wants more international rather than European or domestic games.

The ECA could make even more changes to the calendar, despite the UEFA Nations League launching this month.

“A detailed assessment of the existing international match calendar is required prior to presenting a new model post-2024,” Agnelli added.

“The current model needs modernising.”
