Athletic Bilbao have dismissed Eduardo Berizzo as manager after a poor start to their 2018/19 La Liga campaign
The former Sevilla coach returned to football in May after recovering from prostate cancer to replace Jose Angel Ziganda at the San Mames.
However, Bilbao’s 3-0 defeat at Levante on Monday night leaves them 18th in La Liga with just one win in 14 games.
B team manager Gaizka Garitano will replace Berizzo in the Bilbao dugout ahead of Thursday’s second leg with SD Huesca in a Round of 32 Copa Del Rey tie.
“Athletic Club has decided to end the contract with coach Eduardo Berizzo,” read a statement on Twitter.
“From Wednesday December 5, Gaizka Garitano will be in charge of the first team.”
Garitano previously coach Eibar, Real Valladolid and Deportivo La Coruna.
