Real Madrid full-back Alvaro Odriozola is certain that the referee was right to award them a penalty in their Copa del Rey last-16 win over Leganes

Despite dominating the possession of the ball early on, Real only managed to break the deadlock when Leganes’ Gerard Gumbau fouled Odriozola in the area.

The referee, who earlier denied Leganes two penalty appeals at the Santiago Bernabeu, awarded Los Blancos a spot-kick with Sergio Ramos putting it away for the opening goal.

Lucas Vazquez and Vinicius Junior then got on the scoresheet to complete a 3-0 win for Real on Wednesday night.

Leganes coach Mauricio Pellegrino later rued the penalty decision and questioned whether it was the correct decision following some “very dubious play”.

Speaking after the 3-0 victory, however, Odriozola insisted it was a penalty.

Howe: Bournemouth deserved to win

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has praised his side's discipline and hard work after their 2-0 home win against West Ham on Saturday. Howe was impressed...

“I dribbled into the box and felt a touch from behind, which at the pace I was moving brought me down,” said Odriozola on the club website.

“It’s a clear penalty. Just before, there was a similar move and he didn’t get the ball, there was contact and I thought the ref could have blown for that one too.

“There’s a lot of talk about the officials, but none of them want to screw over one team or another”.

“We’re Real Madrid and we can’t make any excuses. All we can do is work hard to turn our situation around. If this institution has shown me anything at all, it’s that excuses are worth nothing.

“Everyone knew it was a penalty the other day but it wasn’t given. I don’t like to think too much about these things, Madrid is above refereeing decisions and making excuses. Now we have to work to turn this around”.

The second leg between Leganes and Real Madrid will be played at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque on January 16.
