Looking back at the Catalan giants’ tradition in appointing managers, all signs seem to point at Luis Enrique’s current assistant – Juan Carlos Unzue. Being already involved with most of the aspects of the first team, Unzue is Enrique’s choice to take his work forward.

However, recent developments seem to have set the stage for another favourite to take the hot seat in the Camp Nou dugout. As reported by AS, Ernesto Valverde has announced his intention to leave Athletic Bilbao at the end of the season, when his contract expires. Valverde has been managing Bilbao since 2013 with great success, bringing them back in Champions League for the first time in 16 years. His side also recorded a 4-0 win over Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup first leg, in 2015.

While stressing out that he will not listen to any offers until his contract runs out on June 30th, Ernesto Valverde’s announcement that he will not renew his contract with Athletic Bilbao seems to have been strategically planned with the Barcelona job in sight.
