Arsenal are preparing for the biggest betrayal since the transfer of Robin van Persie to Manchester United.

In 2012, van Persie moved from Arsenal to Manchester United in what was seen at that point as one of the biggest betrayals in English football. It now seems that another player will follow the same route, moving from Emirates to Old Trafford.

According to the Spanish media ‘El Confidencial’, Mesut Ozil is very close to join Manchester United next summer, when his contract with the Gunners is set to expire.

Wenger has two major issues to deal with at Emirates this season. First, his team needs to compete for a Champions League spot with teams that have invested heavily and are looking far better on the pitch in this Premier League season. Secondly, the two main stars of the team – Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil – have entered their final year of contract with the Gunners and none of them has any intention to sign a new deal with the club.

Alexis Sanchez has been linked with a move to Manchester City this summer, but most recently it seemed like the Chilean will sign for PSG in July, when his contract with Arsenal will expire. And now Ozil’s future seems to have been established as well. El Confidencial writes that Jose Mourinho would very much like to work again with his former player and has offered him a far better salary than what he is currently earning at Arsenal. The pair worked together at Real Madrid before.

The rumours have already created panic among Arsenal’s fans, who are now remembering the transfer of Robin van Persie to Manchester United. The Dutch striker was an idol for Arsenal, having scored 96 goals in 194 matches for Wenger’s side, but five years ago he moved to Old Trafford for £22,5m.
