Atletico Madrid have established contact with Mesut Ozil’s representatives about a potential return to Spain next summer.
The German midfielder of Arsenal will be out of contract next summer, when his current deal with the Gunners will expire. Negotiations between the club and the player have not led to any result so far, and Ozil’s looks set to leave the club.
However, Arsenal will be looking to offload the player in January, in an attempt to cash in on him rather than to lose him for free in the summer. The Gunners’ situation is not helped by the fact that Ozil can negotiate with any club outside England starting January 1st.
And the latest club to have initiated contact with the player’s representatives is Atletico Madrid, according to The Sun. Atletico are counting on the fact that Ozil might be tempted by a return to Spain, where he previously played for their city rivals, Real.
Diego Simeone relishes the chance of having a world class player like Ozil at his disposal and has instructed his bosses to try and sign the German playmaker. For this reason, Atletico are ready to offer Ozil weekly wages of around €220k/week and a substantial signing on fee, considering the fact that he will sign for free.
It remains to be seen if the idea of returning to Spain, combined with a substantial signing on fee will be enough to persuade Ozil to lower his demands. The German playmaker reportedly asked Arsenal for a €350k/week wage package to continue at Emirates.
