Manchester United legend Eric Cantona says he wants Karim Benzema to be back in the French national team
Karim Benzema hasn’t been considered as a possibility for France in recent months. However, the former Manchester United attacker Eric Cantona claims he is “not the only one” who wants Benzema to be recalled into France’s best XI.
Los Blancos’ forward hasn’t featured for France for more than two years. He last played for Les Blues in October 2015, and missed the Euro 2016 on home ground, following his personal life troubles.
The Frenchman had been charged in connection with an alleged attempt to blackmail Mathieu Valbuena over a sex tape.
All charges were dropped back in July, but the decision of France’s Court of Cassation didn’t change the fact that Didier Deschamps wasn’t counting on the striker anymore.
The national team’s head coach labelled rumours about Benzema’s return as “boring”. This is interesting, since the coach was allowed to recall the striker, as French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet stated Deschamps is free to include Benzema again if he wants to.
Even Benzema stated he’s not hoping for a spot in the squad until France has a new coach. You can imagine how peachy their relationship is, right?
Nevertheless, Cantona would like to see his former team-mate giving another chance to Benzema for salvation in the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
By the way, the Manchester United icon was also criticised from the national team for disciplinary reasons back in his professional career.
“Obviously we want to see the best players, I want to see Karim Benzema in the French team and in my opinion, I’m not the only one,” Cantona told radio station France Inter.
Deschamps is not the first coach Benzema had problems with, as the French striker admitted earlier this week how he lost respect for Jose Mourinho, when the Portuguese coached Real Madrid.
