Jose Mourinho is looking to boost his midfield options at Old Trafford and has identified Atletico Madrid’s player as the perfect solution.
Atletico Madrid were hoping to sign Ander Herrera from Manchester United, as the midfielder’s contract is set to expire next summer. However, it now appears that not only United will fight off Atletico’s interest for Herrera, but they will also be looking to snap one of their central midfielders.
Although Ander Herrera’s contract is set to expire next summer, Manchester United have inserted a 12-month extension clause in his contract and the Red Devils will most probably activate it. In addition to keeping Herrera, Mourinho also wants to add to his midfield line, that has been weakened by the injury of Paul Pogba.
According to the Sun, the Portuguese manager is a keen admirer of Saul Niguez and is ready to submit a bid for him next summer. However, it won’t be easy for Manchester United. Saul just signed a new deal with Atletico Madrid last summer and the 22-year-old now has a transfer release clause of €150m.
The Spanish club are desperate to hold on to their star player and will be hoping that their unwillingness to negotiate any deal, coupled with the big release clause will deter any potential suitors from chasing the midfielder.
The player himself would relish the chance to play at Old Trafford, but only if the clubs agree on the transfer fee or if United would pay the release clause. Otherwise, he does not want to ruin his relationship with the club by putting in a transfer request, according to the reports.
