Tebas confirms Messi’s contract extension

Despite all the rumours and speculations of Messi not agreeing terms with his club, the La Liga president insisted otherwise.

La Liga chief Javier Tebas has insisted that Lionel Messi has already signed a new contract with Barcelona and committed his future to the club. This definitely comes as good news for Barca fans since Messi would have been a free agent from June when his current agreement with the Catalans expires.

Manchester City were one of the clubs linked with the Argentine, with Pep Guardiola being a keen fan of the Catalan’s number 10. However, Tebas has confirmed that the Argentine will not be leaving La Liga and insisted that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner put pen to paper on a new deal recently.

“Messi has a contract which has been renewed,” Tebas told reporters on Tuesday, according to Goal.

“Contracts are official when they are signed and not when it is announced that they have been signed.

“Messi has signed with Barcelona, if I have not been lied to, he has signed.”

Compared to Cristiano Ronaldo, who has been struggling with goals since the start of the season, Lionel Messi has been remarkable, netting 18 goals and providing 4 assists for club and country in just 19 appearances.
