Jamie Redknapp, the former Liverpool player, spoke about the new star arrival, Virgil van Dijk, and he insisted that he believes that the Dutchman can be some kind of proof that the Reds will finish in the top four.
The Dutchman has become the most expensive defender in the history of football as Liverpool decided to pay a fee of £75m for him to Southampton and he managed to score the winner in the Merseyside derby in his first match for the club. Redknapp believes that he will continue like that and will prove his worth…
The former player of the Reds spoke about van Dijk and his impact as he said, according to Sky Sports: “They have brought in a defender and if you look at where Liverpool’s problems have been over the last few years, it has been defensively. So the fact that they have got that money and brought in Van Dijk, who I think is going to be a huge success – I have said it from day one, he is the sort of player that they need.”
He also added that he can be the so much needed leader: “It gives them a defensive base they have not had. They need a leader and I have been saying it for a while. Defensively they have never had anyone – [Ragnar] Klavan, [Joel] Matip, [Dejan] Lovren – none of them are that standout centre-back that you look at and who is going to lead from the back, going to be a good talker.”
In the end, Jamie Redknapp claimed that the defence has been Liverpool’s biggest problem: “I think the most important thing is he defends properly and that is where Liverpool have let themselves down. They have so much of the ball and it is just those silly moments and slip-ups that have cost them these last few years.”
