Preview: Eibar – Atletico Madrid

Matches Preview

The Ipurua Municipal Stadium hosts a tasty clash between one of the hottest teams in La Liga right now and one of the title contenders, as Eibar (27pts, W8, D3, L7) welcome second-placed Atletico Madrid (39pts, W11, D6, L1).

Flashscore presents the key facts before the match:

After a poor start to the campaign, Eibar are unbeaten in their last seven LL games (W6, D1, GD+13) – an impressive streak of form that has pushed them up from 17th to seventh in the table, three points clear of Athletic Bilbao. A win over Atletico would see them move into sixth place if Villarreal fail to defeat Real Madrid in the previous fixture.

Diego Simeone’s side make the trip to the Ipurua after sealing their place in the quarter-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 3-0 win over second division side Lleida on Tuesday. Atletico remain nine points adrift of unstoppable pacesetters Barcelona having suffered just one defeat in the league so far this season, a 1-0 loss to Espanyol in their last away game.

Atletico have won all six previous top-flight meetings with Eibar, conceding just three goals and netting 13. The two sides have played against each other 12 times in all competitions, and Atletico have been utterly dominant (W9, D2, L1).

Formidable striker Diego Costa will serve a one-match ban after being sent off in Atletico’s 2-0 win over Getafe last weekend. Costa scored in his first LL game back at Atletico, but picked up two bookings.

Players to watch: Ex-Las Palmas loanee Vitolo pulled on an Atletico shirt for the first time and got his name on the scoresheet in Tuesday’s cup clash with Lleida. Boss Simeone might relegate Carrasco or Correa to the bench in favour of the former Sevilla midfielder. Charles (six) and Joan Jordan (five) have scored 45.8% of Eibar’s league goals so far this season.

Stat attack: Atletico are the only LL side yet to be awarded a penalty this campaign (three conceded) and they have not seen an opposition player dismissed so far. Both Atletico (70.4%) and Eibar (70.8 %) have scored most of their league goals in the second-half.
