Garcia hoping “extra” rest gives Marseille an advantage

Marseille manager Rudi Garcia is hoping that the squad’s extra day of rest compared to Atletico Madrid will help give them an advantage

The Olympians head into tonight’s final as the firm underdogs against the two-time Europa League winners.

One small advantage that Marseille may have over their opponents at Lyon may be the fact that they played their league game against Guingamp last Friday compared to Atletico’s final La Liga game of the season against Getafe on Saturday.

Speaking ahead to the final at Lyon’s Groupama Stadium, Garcia acknowledged that it may give his side a small edge.

“The extra rest might be beneficial and we’ll have everyone on top form. I don’t know how many games we’ve played but it’s a lot,” said the French coach, according to Football-Espana.

“Those players we had injury doubts about are ready and in good shape.”

Garcia admitted that he has “a lot” of respect for their opponents, but believes that anything could happen over the 90 minutes of football.

“We have a lot of respect for Atletico. They are very solid, have the best defence in the Spanish League, and formidable attackers in Griezmann and Costa,” said the 54-year-old.

“The character of both teams is similar; we’ve shown this in the Europa League and also to get into a Champions League place.

“Atleti are one of the great teams in Spain. Perhaps they have more experience but this is a 90-minute football match – and that’s it!
