Spain captain Sergio Ramos has taken to social media to call for unity among the players and the supporters after Julen Lopetegui’s shock departure with just two days before the start of their World Cup campaign

The announcement came in light of news that Real Madrid had hired Lopetegui to replace Zinedine Zidane at the club for next season on a three-year deal, despite the fact that the 51-year-old had only signed a new contract with Spain just three weeks ago.

The president of the REFEF, Luis Rubiales reacted furiously to the news and fired Lopetegui and later named Sporting Director Fernando Hierro as his replacement for the World Cup.

Ramos has now taken to Twitter to rally everyone behind the national team in this difficult moment.

“We are the national team, we represent a shield, some colours, a hobby and a country. The responsibility and commitment are with you and for you. Yesterday, today and tomorrow, together: #VamosEspana,” wrote Ramos.

Spain will face their Iberian neighbours Portugal for the first game of the World Cup in Group B on Friday.
