Bournemouth striker Jermain Defoe is still obsessed with scoring goals, despite being seventh in the Premier League’s all-time list

The England international is now within reach of breaking into the top five of the list with his 162 goals just one short of Robbie Fowler and another 14 off Arsenal legend Thierry Henry.

Frank Lampard (177), Andy Cole (187), Wayne Rooney (208) and Alan Shearer (260) make up the leading four scorers.

“On a personal note it’s special because, as a kid, I was obsessed with goals,” said Defoe, according to Reuters.

“I always thought if I could score one goal in the Premier League it would be special.

“When I finish playing, if I could think ‘right, you’re in the top-five all-time goalscorers in the Premier League’ it would be one of those moments where you would probably have to pinch yourself.”

The 35-year-old has played for the likes of West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, Portsmouth and Sunderland over his long Premier League career.

Defoe could be back in action for Bournemouth in their Premier League opener against the newly-promoted Cardiff City on Saturday.
