Both Leonardo and Paolo Maldini would love to sign Anthony Martial for AC Milan, but their late offer was turned down by Manchester United
The Frenchman was keen on a departure from Old Trafford this summer after playing time under Jose Mourinho became even further restricted following the arrival of Alexis Sanchez in January from Arsenal.
But, despite having no shortage of admirers, Martial will now be remaining at United after no progress was made in the English transfer deadline day window on Thursday.
This development came despite the strong interest that Milan had in signing the 22-year-old, who they believed fitted the kind of profile they were seeking.
Milan boss Gennaro Gattuso specifically wants to add a winger, midfielder and a world-class striker to his ranks for the upcoming season with one out of three having been acquired so far.
Alfredo Pedulla reported that both Leonardo and Maldini had viewed Martial as one of the ideal options to meet Gattuso’s criteria and had attempted to make a late move for the out-of-favour striker at United.
The proposal sent to Manchester was a paid loan spell for Martial, but Jose Mourinho opted against sanctioning it after his lack of signings this summer.
