Chelsea have done great business to bolster their attacking ranks but they need to improve their quality at the back to make the leap forward.

Frank Lampard is guiding Blues to Champions League qualification. It was not expected at the start of the season but has been a certainty for the majority of the campaign.

Youth academy graduates have stepped up and made everyone take notice of their abilities. The transfer ban was never truly felt at Stamford Bridge.

Tammy Abraham, Mason Mount and Fikayo Tomori have been the highlights. While Reece James and Billy Gilmour are seen as long term first team members.

But this is not where Chelsea should stop. And they have not. Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech are joining the roster for a fraction of proceeds from the deal that took Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.

The Alvaro Morata money is still available. Chelsea have been linked to spend that money. Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink wants Marina Granovskaia to use the available sums to bolster their back-line.

There is weight in what Hasselbaink has said. Analysis of Chelsea’s squad and the transfer market, the addition of two players can change their complete outlook.

Kalidou Koulibaly

Fikayo Tomori is great. So is Antonio Rudiger. Cannot forget Kurt Zouma in this discussion. Andreas Christensen has a good set of skills as well. Despite all their promises, Chelsea continue to remain lack luster on set pieces and concede cheap goals.

The defense is a problem area, one that can be resolved through the acquisition of Kalidou Koulibaly. The Senegal international is one of the best defenders in the world, and can give Virgil van Dijk a run for his money.

Koulibaly’s acquisition will make Chelsea stronger. He is the marquee signing that they need to show their intent.

The Blues have been great going forward and his presence will make them fearless at the back.

Nicolas Tagliafico

Emerson Palmieri is leaving. Both Inter Milan and Juventus are interested in securing his services. It will leave Marcos Alonso as the sole heir to the left-back spot.

In recent weeks, the Spaniard has given a good account of his abilities and should continue his stay in West London.

Chelsea have been linked with Ben Chilwell and the Leicester City man would be a great addition. However, the Foxes are asking too much for his services. And he does not add too much going forward. Nicolas Tagliafico does.

The Argentina international is reliable at the back and helps going forward. Chelsea need to stem the influx of goals and Tagliafico will help with that.
