Rene Meulensteen feels Harry Kane and his ’25-plus’ goals will help Manchester United ‘close the gap’ to Liverpool along with a new center-half.

Links to Harry Kane refuse to die down as Manchester United’s transfer activities go under the scope.

The English striker is a proven goalscorer at the highest level, having won Premier League (x2) and World Cup (1x) Golden Boot awards. Therefore, United are reportedly interested.

Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, and Mason Greenwood make a promising trio for the Red Devils. A 33-point gap to Premier League champions Liverpool, however, means some extra firepower wouldn’t be a bad call.

Exposing this need is the fact United’s 66 goals in the league this season paled significantly to Liverpool’s 85 and Manchester City’s 102.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already working flat out on bringing in new attacking options, with Jadon Sancho and Kane understood to be top targets.

Before pursuing them any further, though, Meulensteen suggested Solskjaer addresses other lingering issues such as the goalkeeping and center-back positions.

“They first need to solve and get clarity about the goalkeeping position because now there’s a debate about [David] de Gea and the rumors with [Kasper] Schmeichel, but also [Dean] Henderson is there,” the ex-Red Devils coach told talkSPORT.

“So that needs to be solved to make sure that’s clear.

“People are on De Gea’s back, but he’s still a very good goalkeeper; he’s had a few blips this season, he needs to sort that out.

“They also need someone next to Harry Maguire to strengthen that [defense].”

Meulensteen also believes signing a proven scoring talent in Kane should take priority over Sancho.

He added: “They’re bringing Jadon Sancho in, but more than anything, I would have gone for a more prolific out-and-out striker, somebody like Harry Kane.

“There is so much creativity coming from midfield with [Bruno] Fernandes, [Paul] Pogba, [Marcus] Rashford, [Anthony] Martial… they can all contribute to goalscoring.

“But [they need] somebody in the middle who’s going to score 25-plus goals. That will close the gap for United.”

It seems Meulensteen isn’t the only one who believes United need Kane more than Sancho either.
