As interest grows in Donny van de Beek, it’s time to check out three alternatives that Real Madrid could pursue instead.
Chances of Paul Pogba going to Spain fade with each passing day. The Frenchman seems set to remain at Manchester United for another season, leaving Donny van de Beek as Real Madrid’s next midfield target.
The 23-year-old’s role in helping Ajax reach the Champions League semi-finals last season caused a wave of interest. After losing Frenkie de Jong and Matthijs de Ligt, however, the Dutch club refused to sell another of its stars.
But to Van de Beek’s credit, he didn’t let the setback deter him. The midfielder instead accepted the mantle of Ajax’s main man, contributing towards 21% of Ajax’s 68 goals before the Eredivisie season was unexpectedly cancelled.
It brought a sudden end to Van de Beek’s campaign and possibly his Ajax career. In fact, chief executive Edwin van der Sar confirmed last week that Real Madrid and Manchester United remain interested.
Although the financial implications of COVID-19 could force both clubs to withdraw as Ajax won’t be able to accept a cut-price deal. The Dutch club has already lost a lot of money. And with Van de Beek’s transfer value at €44m, they’ll likely hold out for a sizeable sum of money.
It’s only natural Ajax will take this approach as Van de Beek is still under contract until 2022, and that signing a replacement seems unrealistic.
So here on Ronaldo.com, we present three alternatives that Real Madrid could pursue instead.
