Villarreal and Atletico Madrid played out an action-packed thriller but neither side had the quality to convert any of the 41 shots between them.

Lack of quality was the theme of tonight’s game between mid-table Villarreal and misfiring Atletico Madrid.

Of the 23 shots, the home side had only three hit the target. Diego Simeone’s side did not fare much better, with three on target from 18.

It was yet another good night’s work for Atleti shot-stopper Jan Oblak, as he kept his side in the game with more marvelous saves.

Big summer signing Joao Felix, quite simply struggled to find the target.

If it wasn’t the post in the way, his efforts were wide or high of the goal.

Villarreal will be the happier of the two sides.

But for Diego Simeone eight draws in 16 La Liga games so far this season leaves him five points adrift of the top two.

But that lead could be extended to as much as 11 points as both Barcelona and Real Madrid have two games in hand on Los Colchoneros
