As doubts linger over Kepa’s future, it’s time to check out the top 5 goalkeepers that Chelsea could sign as their newest no 1.
It’s been a crazy 23 months for Kepa Arrizabalaga at Chelsea.
The Spaniard arrived at Stamford Bridge in August 2018 as world’s most expensive goalkeeper for a whopping €80m from Athletic Bilbao to replace the Real Madrid-bound Thibaut Courtois.
But nothing has gone right for Kepa ever since. He’s been inconsistent and hasn’t been surplus to the odd mistake either. In fact, Frank Lampard left him out for four Premier League fixtures in February.
These turns of events have fuelled doubts over Kepa’s future, with reports linking him with a return to La Liga at either Sevilla or Valencia. Should that come true, then who should Chelsea replace him with?
Here on Ronaldo.com, we name the top 5 goalkeepers that the Blues should make a move for in the summer transfer window.
The 23-year-old is billed as a star for the future and has enjoyed a solid season on loan at Sheffield United.
Henderson has proved himself as a capable Premier League goalkeeper, having kept 11 clean sheets and conceded just 26 times in 30 games. And the best is surely yet come from him.
Either way, Henderson is set for a long and successful career. The question is will that be at parent club Manchester United or not? Unless David de Gea leaves, the latter may be the most likely outcome.
This could prompt Chelsea to make a move as it would be a win-win situation for both player and club. For instance, Henderson is a young capable keeper who will fit the homegrown quota.
And why would the Englishman turn down the chance of being the next no1 Chelsea goalkeeper for a role as De Gea’s back-up?
Ok, this one is a long shot but still worth a try.
Oblak is at least one of the top three goalkeepers in Europe at the moment, if not the best. He’s been a revelation for Atletico Madrid, winning La Liga’s Zamora Trophy for the last four seasons in a row.
But Atletico’s lack of major silverware may prompt Oblak to consider a change. His talents make him a splendid catch for any top club, and he won’t be short of offers either. So why shouldn’t Chelsea make a move?
His €120m release clause is a bit of a turnoff, but then again Chelsea did sign the relatively unknown Kepa for €80m in 2018.
The World Cup winner has spent this season on loan at Real Madrid as Thibaut Courtois’ back-up. He’s made just eight appearances in all competitions, keeping three clean sheets and conceding nine goals.
Before joining Madrid, however, Areola had displaced Gianluigi Buffon as Paris Saint-Germain’s first-choice. His strong form led the legendary goalkeeper to return to Juventus last summer.
So it was a surprise when PSG sent Areola on loan to Los Blancos in exchange for Keylor Navas.
The three-time Champions League winner has since established himself as the clear #1 in Paris, which may prompt Areola to leave for good. It’s clear he’s not as valued by the club as he believed.
Chelsea could offer Areola an escape route by signing him on loan if Kepa leaves, and they can’t find anyone else.
The 21-year-old is arguably the most promising young goalkeeper in world football, and one that Chelsea would love to get their hands on. They’re not alone in that aspect, though. Therefore, Frank Lampard would need to make a swift move.
And while Donnarumma is no stranger to transfer talk, one of those rumours may become a reality one day.
‘Dollar-umma’ is out of contract at AC Milan next year and is yet to sign an extension. Talks between the club and his agent, Mino Raiola, remain ongoing at this stage.
But even if Donnarumma signs on, Milan’s fall from grace will surely lead to his departure one day. The Rossoneri’s ongoing problems with UEFA’s FFP rules may even prompt a sale.
Thankfully, they’ve been given an extra year to balance their books by UEFA because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Finishing our list for a possible new Chelsea goalkeeper is Mike Maignan.
The 25-year-old has kept 42 clean sheets in 132 appearances for Lille since his €1m transfer from PSG in 2015. He’s been the club’s undisputed #1 since the 2017/18 season.
Last term was arguably an excellent one for Maignan, with the keeper keeping 12 clean sheets in 28 games as Lille secured back-to-back finishes in Ligue 1’s top-four spots. He also conceded just 27 goals.
Maignan even captained Les Dogues during a 2-1 Champions League defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge last December.
Now rumours have surfaced claiming that Lille are ready to sell him on the cheap due to the COVID-19 impact on their finances, with Tottenham and Chelsea both interested.
So there you have it, the five potential Chelsea goalkeeper options if Kepa leaves.
