Manchester United – 1995/96
Everyone at St James’ Park were dreaming of a Premier League trophy coming there way, as Newcastle United looked to be crowned league champions of the English top-flight for the first time since 1927.
A commanding 12-point lead over Manchester United by January was surely a good omen.
But somehow Kevin Keegan’s side managed to mess it all up big time to surrender their lead. A run of five defeats in eight games was what undid everything in the end.
United, on the other hand, won 13 of their final 16 matches following the return of captain Eric Cantona from suspension.
What made this comeback even more special was the fact Fergie’s men were down in fifth place by Christmas.
