Gianluigi Buffon’s agent has announced a decision over his future will be made in “around 10 days” as he weighs up an offer from FC Porto.
After turning down a lucrative new contract from Paris Saint-Germain, Buffon is considering his options for the future. The Italian recently confirmed that he’s received “some nice proposals”, but suggested he could take a sabbatical instead.
At 41, the legendary goalkeeper will surely be considering hanging up his gloves altogether. However, an interesting new proposal has arrived at Buffon’s doorstep from Portuguese champions Porto.
Sergio Conceicao’s side will likely need a new keeper following Iker Casillas’ heart attack in May. It currently remains unclear whether he will be able to resume his playing career, with the Spaniard still awaiting updates from the doctor.
“We know there is interest and someone close to Porto has contacted us,” Buffon’s agent, Silvano Martina, told RTP.
“Buffon wants to play for another year and Porto are a club he likes, but he has four children and transferring his whole family is something that he needs to reflect on.
“It’s true, he already played with Sergio Conceicao and it’d be nice to have him as a coach. Porto are a big club, among the most important in Europe and with a strong history behind them.
“Buffon will make a decision in around 10 days.”
Barcelona have also reportedly made Buffon an offer for next season. Although it will likely only be a back-up role to number one Marc-Andre ter Stegen, which will probably be a turn-off.
Meanwhile, Turkish giants Fenerbahce are also in the frame for the Italian’s services next season.
But an emotional return to Juventus could be on the cards in a sporting director role should Buffon indeed retire.
